Announcement

I'm going to hospital tomorrow. Blogging will resume when it resumes.

Georg II, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen

He took such an active interest in his court theater that he's considered the first modern theatrical director.

Princess Beatrice

Youngest child of Queen Victoria.

Elizabeth I

The Armada portrait. This was in celebration of the defeat of an attempt to place England under a foreign tyranny. That's a fact that should never be forgotten, in spite of what some internet twits say.

Day Off

Just not up to dealing with it today.

Cixi, Dowager Empress of China

She loved mugging for the camera.
Consequently, there's an enormous number of pictures of her.
She was spared the knowledge that the last photograph taken of her would show a badly decomposed corpse. I'm not posting that one. It was taken after her tomb was robbed as part of the complete collapse of order that usually follows a switch to a republican form of government. As my grandmother always said, democracy is like boiled chicken. The scum rises to the top.
